First hours in Shanghai

Arrived on-time and short cab to the hotel – JW Marriott on Tomorrow Square (an acquaintance through the Caples Awards referred to it as Disney-like “Tomorrowland”). It’s dark already so I can only see the famous telecom tower and a few other skyscrapers. Lin and Scarlett narrate the cab ride, translating advertisements and agreeing on Japanese cartoons as ones they knew before they knew Disney, as well as the car as a cultural status symbol.
Scarlett, Lin and I have dinner at the Chinese restaurant (of course). It’s proper to share dishes so we order a series of appetizers – tofu, fish, bbq pork and soups, including a Shanghai specialty of double-mushroom (which I order mostly because the menu has a fabulous icon of a woman suggestively posed to symbolically repesent Shanghai.I really want a t-shirt with it).
I have language questions and learn that "baby" is "ba-be" and means "treasure". For practical sake, I also learn to say “Sorry/excuse me” (du bu-she), but Lin says I really don’t need to say it here.
I'm determined to fit in.

everyone here keeps asking how you're all liking the food. by "you all" i think they are referring to you. so when you feel inspired, that's your hot FAQ.
Food's going pretty well actually - very fresh ingredients and very different from Chinese food in the US. There are fewer incidents of nuts and other foods I can't eat. They've also got me addicted to dumplings (see separate post on that).
